Signs it is worth reaching out sooner rather than later

Homeowners often wait longer than they should, then end up calling in the middle of a storm when everyone else is calling too. A few things are worth a look before that happens. Watch for large dead limbs high in the canopy, especially the bare gray branches that oaks and pines shed first in a blow. Notice if a tree has started to lean where it did not before, if the soil is heaving or cracking on one side of the trunk, or if roots are lifting near the base - all signs the root plate may be failing in our loose coastal soil. Mushrooms or soft, punky wood at the base can mean internal rot you cannot see from the ground. Cracks where two big limbs meet, branches rubbing the roof or resting on the power drop, and canopies so dense the wind cannot pass through are all reasons to get an honest read now, while it is a routine trim instead of an emergency removal. None of these mean a tree has to come down - often a targeted prune solves it - but they are all worth a free look.

The best time to deal with a risky tree is a calm week in spring, not the day a named storm enters the Gulf. Preventive work makes a real difference on this coast: thinning a dense canopy lets wind flow through instead of catching the whole tree like a sail, and clearing deadwood removes the limbs most likely to come down on a roof or a car.
